Best time to visit El Nido: month by month

Checked Oct 2026. Updated . Compiled from the sources listed at the end of this page.

The best time to visit El Nido for dry weather is January to April: in ERA5 climate data for the El Nido area, those months average 45 to 66 mm of rain, against 271 to 345 mm a month from June to October. Those dry months are also the east northeast wind season and the busy season: Palawan's peak arrival months in 2025 were January to May and November to December, and Christmas, New Year and Holy Week (Mar 25 to 27, 2027) are the dates to book early (checked Oct 30, 2026).

How this page is built: we compile official PAGASA climate data and notices, Coast Guard rules, operator pages and the 2026 and 2027 holiday proclamations. El Nido has no PAGASA station, so the El Nido rain and wind columns are averages we computed from ERA5, a global climate model dataset, and we show the nearest PAGASA station beside them. Nothing here is first-hand, and averages are not a forecast for your dates.

Weather on the day decides whether boats sail. For a specific trip, check PAGASA's forecast and gale warnings and any Coast Guard sea travel suspension before you sail.

El Nido weather by month

The first column is the ERA5 average for the grid cell that covers the El Nido area, centred at 11.0 N, 119.5 E, about 23 km south east of El Nido on OpenStreetMap's coordinates. The second is PAGASA's Coron station, about 124 km to the north east, which is the nearest station with official 1991 to 2020 normals. Rain is in millimetres; a PAGASA rainy day has at least 1 mm.

Month El Nido area rain, ERA5 (mm) Coron station rain (mm) / rainy days, PAGASA
Jan 57 19.2 / 3
Feb 45 22.9 / 2
Mar 58 15.4 / 3
Apr 66 37.0 / 4
May 195 186.9 / 11
Jun 283 318.7 / 17
Jul 345 521.5 / 21
Aug 284 471.7 / 19
Sep 322 470.4 / 20
Oct 271 241.2 / 14
Nov 187 107.1 / 7
Dec 161 90.3 / 6
Year about 2,270 2,502.3 / 127

Both columns tell the same story: a dry block from January to April, a sharp rise in May, a wet block from June to October and a gradual drying in November and December. In the model data the El Nido area is wetter than the Coron station from November to April and drier from June to September.

How far to trust the model column. ERA5 is a reanalysis: a weather model run over past observations, on a 0.25 degree grid, as Open-Meteo describes it. It is not a rain gauge in town. We ran the same calculation for the ERA5 cell next to the Coron station: it gave about 2,370 mm a year against PAGASA's measured 2,502.3 mm, with the same wet and dry months, but it counted about 185 rainy days against PAGASA's 127. Models record many days of light drizzle, so we do not show model rainy day counts for El Nido.

Wind by month

Boat days depend on wind and sea state as well as rain. These are ERA5 averages for the same El Nido area cell: the usual direction of the day's wind, and the average of each day's top wind speed at 10 m.

Month Usual wind direction, El Nido area Average daily top wind (km/h)
Jan East northeast 22
Feb East northeast 22
Mar East northeast 20
Apr East northeast 17
May East southeast 13
Jun South 13
Jul Southwest 15
Aug Southwest 16
Sep West southwest 15
Oct Northeast 14
Nov East northeast 18
Dec East northeast 21

The two halves match PAGASA's monsoons. PAGASA describes the Northeast Monsoon (Amihan) as cold winds from the northeast, and the Southwest Monsoon (Habagat) as warm moist winds from the southwest causing rains over the western portion of the country from May to September. In the ERA5 averages, the windiest months are December to February, during the Amihan, even though they are among the driest. The Coron station normals agree on the shift: east winds most of the year, south from May to August and southwest in September.

The 2026 to 2027 season so far

PAGASA's notices for this year line up with the averages:

  • May 30, 2026: PAGASA announced the start of the Southwest Monsoon (Habagat), and on Jun 4, 2026 the onset of the rainy season across the western sections of Luzon and the Visayas.
  • Oct 5, 2026: PAGASA said the Habagat season had officially ended, which also marked the end of the rainy season over the western sections of Luzon and the Visayas.
  • Oct 27, 2026: PAGASA declared the start of the Northeast Monsoon (Amihan) season, expected to bring cooler weather, episodes of cold surges and rough sea conditions in the coming months.
  • El Niño: on Sep 23, 2026, PAGASA said a strong El Niño was active and expected to become very strong and persist through the first half of 2027. PAGASA says El Niño generally brings warmer temperatures and below normal rainfall across most of the Philippines, though tropical cyclones can still bring short heavy rain.

What that means for a trip: PAGASA does not give an El Nido forecast in these notices, so read them as a national outlook, not a promise of dry days in El Nido. Check PAGASA's current forecast in the week before you travel.

Boats, tours and typhoons

Island hopping depends on the sea on the day, not on the monthly rain total.

  • Coast Guard suspensions. El Nido Map reports that island hopping boats do not run when the Coast Guard suspends sailing for weather, and that this happens with some regularity between June and October. Under Philippine Coast Guard Memorandum Circular 02-23, vessels may not sail, except to take shelter, when Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 or higher is raised at the origin, along the route or at the destination.
  • Typhoon season. PAGASA says about 20 tropical cyclones enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility each year, about 8 or 9 cross the country, and the peak is July to October, when nearly 70% of typhoons develop.
  • Rainy season tours. El Nido Paradise, a tour operator, says tours still run in the rainy season but the boat ride is rougher, and higher waves can make some islands and lagoons inaccessible.
  • Buffer days. Charlie's El Nido, a hotel, suggests staying four nights or more in July and August so that one postponed tour does not decide the trip. Tours A to D, their prices and the fees on top are compared on El Nido island hopping tours.

Crowds, holidays and prices

El Nido recorded 642,385 overnight tourist arrivals in 2025, second in Palawan after Puerto Princesa, according to the Provincial Tourism Promotions and Development Office as reported by Palawan News (Apr 8, 2026). The figures come from TourLISTA check-ins at accredited accommodations and leave out same-day visitors. The office named January to May and November to December as the peak months for arrivals in 2025.

Charlie's El Nido says Christmas, New Year, Holy Week and school holidays fill flights, tours and rooms quickly, and advises booking several months ahead for those dates. For prices, El Nido Paradise says rooms are usually cheaper in the June to November off-peak months, by up to $100 a night, and that local airlines discount fares then (2021 article, updated 2022). We have not found an official price index for El Nido, so treat those as one operator's report. Areas and listed price bands are on Where to stay in El Nido.

FAQs

What is the best month to visit El Nido?

For the least rain, January to April: ERA5 data for the El Nido area averages 45 to 66 mm a month, and the Coron station has 2 to 4 rainy days. February is the driest; April is the hottest month at the Coron station and less windy than January and February in the model data.

When is the rainy season in El Nido?

PAGASA's rainy season runs June to November. In the El Nido area data, June to October is the wet block, at 271 to 345 mm a month, with July the peak. In 2026, PAGASA declared the rainy season for the western sections of Luzon and the Visayas on Jun 4 and ended the Habagat on Oct 5.

Which months should you avoid in El Nido?

No month is closed, but July to October combines the most rain with PAGASA's typhoon peak, and El Nido Map reports regular Coast Guard sailing suspensions from June to October. If you go then, leave buffer days for tours.

Do island hopping tours run during the rainy season?

Yes, on days when the Coast Guard allows sailing. El Nido Paradise says the ride is rougher and some islands and lagoons may be inaccessible, and boats stay in port during Coast Guard suspensions or when Wind Signal No. 1 or higher is raised.

When is peak season in El Nido?

The provincial tourism office named January to May and November to December as Palawan's peak arrival months in 2025. Charlie's El Nido, a hotel, says Christmas, New Year, Holy Week (Mar 25 to 27 in 2027) and school holidays fill flights, tours and rooms quickly.

Is December a good time to go to El Nido?

December starts PAGASA's dry season, with 161 mm in the El Nido area data and 6 rainy days at Coron, wetter than January to April. It is also windy and holiday busy, so book Christmas and New Year dates early.

Will El Niño affect El Nido in 2026 and 2027?

PAGASA expects a very strong El Niño to last through the first half of 2027, and says El Niño generally brings below normal rainfall across most of the Philippines. It gives no El Nido specific forecast, so check PAGASA's forecast before your trip.
